Set in a picturesque Vienna of yesteryear, this timeless tale follows a worldly wise woman who finds herself tangled up in a steamy love affair with a younger man. But alas, the laws of time prove unyielding as she must ultimately give him up to a stunning young heiress. Amidst the hilarious antics and dreamy nostalgia, Hofmannsthal weaves in moments of profound human drama and astute social commentary. And let’s not forget Strauss’s epic score, which nimbly fuses the elegance of Mozart with the grandeur of Wagner. It’s no wonder this opera has stood the test of time!
