For more than a century, the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival has transformed winter into a season of celebration, creativity, and community spirit. Dating back to 1897, this iconic Adirondack tradition is one of the oldest winter carnivals in the eastern United States — and it continues to shine brighter every year.
At the heart of the 10-day festival is the breathtaking Ice Palace, handcrafted by volunteers using thousands of ice blocks harvested from Lake Flower. Glowing each night in Pontiac Bay, the Ice Palace is a must-see centerpiece that captures the imagination of visitors of all ages.
The Winter Carnival offers something for everyone, featuring family-friendly events, live entertainment, winter sports, community performances, two parades, and dazzling fireworks displays. One of the most anticipated traditions is the coronation of the King and Queen on the first Friday night of the 10-day festival, honoring two local citizens recognized for their dedication and volunteer service to the Saranac Lake community. The royal court also includes a Prince and Princess selected from Paul Smith’s College and North Country Community College, Royal Lads and Lassies from Saranac Lake High School, and Pages chosen from area elementary schools. The celebration continues with a Royalty Reception, where the newly crowned royals meet and greet the community, adding to the charm and nostalgia that draw visitors back year after year.
Another beloved tradition is the annual Winter Carnival button and poster, collectible keepsakes designed by Saranac Lake native and Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau. Collected by visitors and residents alike, these buttons and posters serve as both cherished mementos and important fundraisers that help support future Winter Carnival celebrations.
Powered by volunteers and supported by local businesses, the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival is more than an event — it’s a celebration of winter, community pride, and Adirondack resilience. Whether you’re exploring the Ice Palace, cheering on parade floats, or enjoying the festive atmosphere downtown, the Winter Carnival invites everyone to come together and embrace the season.
