The Craig Wood Story

Craig Wood, a native of Lake Placid, was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2008. His impressive career includes winning the Masters Tournament in 1941, the US Open, and 21 PGA Tour events. Wood is also famously remembered as the victim of Gene Sarazen’s historic double eagle at the 1935 Masters Tournament, commemorated by Sarazen’s Bridge on the 15th hole of Augusta National. Additionally, he was a member of three US Ryder Cup teams and set the long drive record of 430 yards on the “Old Course” at St. Andrews.

In 1954, the Town of North Elba honored Wood by renaming the Lake Placid Golf and Country Club to the Craig Wood Golf Course. Craig Wood remains one of Lake Placid’s most distinguished citizens and is buried in the North Elba Cemetery on Old Military Road, overlooking the Lake Placid Horseshow Grounds.
